The City Circle line provides a loop line starting and ending at Central, and extending under the central business district of Sydney.
It was built in 3 stages. Firstly, the section from Central to St James was used to terminate trains and send them back to the suburbs. The section from Central to Wynyard (and on the the North Shore) was opened with the Harbour Bridge. Finally the section from Wynyard to St James was opened in 1956, forming the loop we have today.
At its lowest point, parts of the City Circle are below sea level.
