The Crookwell branch lies in the central south of the state. It starts in the city of Goulburn and heads north-west to Crookwell.
The line was built at the urging of local farmers, who needed a reliable way to get their produce to market. The terrain around the line is quite hilly, and roads were frequently cut during bad weather.
During its lifetime, trains carried passengers, stock, general goods, iron ore and superphosphate. By the 70s, traffic had declined and the by the mid-80s traffic ceased due to the line being unprofitable.
In November 2001 the Goulburn Crookwell Heritage Society gained accreditation to run tourist rail trikes and similar vehicles over the line. They are starting with sections at the top and bottom of the branch, and plan to eventually re-open the whole line.
