The Eastern Suburbs line branches off the City Circle at Town Hall, although it has its own dedicated pair of tracks that start at a junction just to the north of Erskineville Station. It extends to Bondi Junction in the eastern suburbs. This line is a recent addition to the Sydney network, although its construction took a very long time due to political issues.
Originally the line was planned to extend south through Randwick and the NSW University but this did not eventuate. The proposed stations were to be known as: Charing Cross, Frenchmans Road, Randwick, University and Kingsford.
There has been recent talk of extending the line to Bondi Beach, however the residents there have been protesting against this.
